“Perranporth Beach at Sunset”
Original oil on canvas. Width 51cm x Height 76cm or 20 x 30 inches. Signed. Unframed. With a certificate of authenticity.
This painting show Perranporth Beach with a deep purple sunset. Perranporth is one of my favorite beaches to visit in Cornwall. It’s the beach famous for surfing, snorkelling, sailing and generally splashing around.
There are miles of really golden sand, huge surf, and gorgeous sand dunes. Starting from the village, it’s easily accessible and there’s a selection of cafe’s and bars close by. If the tide’s right out you can walk up the beach to Ligger Point, just a 2 mile jaunt away.
Because the beach is so huge, it almost feels as if you have the place to yourself and the fresh air off the ocean is exhilarating. Early morning you’ll probably see a few horses and their riders having a paddle in the surf and there’s a welcome cafe for a coffee stop halfway along. You can make the return journey (or if the tide’s in) over the extensive sand dunes which are teeming with wildlife, including butterflies and lizards.
I like to work in oils because of their versatility. You can layer the paint so that it has a translucency. It is so robust a medium I can scrape the paint back or scratch into it too. This is another in my series of wave paintings which I started 5 years ago and numbering 50.
