This painting is inspired by Cligga Head, Perranporth, which is one of my favourite beaches to visit in Cornwall. It’s the beach famous for surfing, snorkelling, sailing.
There are miles of really golden sand, huge surf, and gorgeous sand dunes. Starting from the village, it’s easily accessible and there’s a selection of cafe’s and bars close by. If the tide’s right out you can walk up the beach to Ligger Point, just a 2 mile away.
The dunes are also a valuable resource for wildlife, with many rare plants and insects including Cornwall’s largest colony of the silver-studded blue, a Red Data Book species.
Southwest of Perranporth, the coast becomes more rocky, with cliffs rising to about 300 feet (90 metres) at Cligga Head. These cliffs form the Cligga Head SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest), noted for its geological and biological characteristics.
Early morning you’ll probably see a few horses and their riders having a paddle in the surf and there’s a welcome cafe for a coffee stop halfway along.
I like to work in oils because of their versatility. You can layer the paint so that it has a translucency. Also It is so robust a medium I can scrape the paint back or scratch into it too. This is another in my series of wave paintings which I started 5 years ago and numbering over 50.
