Lockdown has been an interesting time for me, in some areas there has been little change to my routine. I usually spend much of my time in the studio, if I can, painting alone. So there hasn’t been much of a difference there. It’s been a really productive time for me. Also as the art fairs I was going to attend have been postponed so most of my new work has only been available online.

The good weather at the start of lockdown was a bonus. The recent rain has also helped with my veg plot. I love to grow whatever I can in the summer months, and lockdown has made more time for gardening. It’s great to get outside after being in the studio with the haze of paint fumes.

I have missed catching up with family and friends. Teignmouth is a small town so you can see other locals quite easily, but the 2 metres distance rule soon to be 1 metre makes things different.

Looking forward to the autumn with a couple of art fairs planned. If they get the green light to go ahead that is. Firstly the Contemporary Art Fair – Surrey at Sandown Park Race Course from 25th – 27th September 2020 and secondly the Contemporary Art Fair – Windsor at Royal Windsor Racecourse from 13th – 15th November 2020. Really hope you can join me.

My last few paintings have been all about the beach.

I have finally got to swim in the sea this year in Teignmouth. Brisk but refreshing. “It’s fine once you’re in. You just need to keep swimming to keep warm” is what I said to my partner.

I had a good May this year, sales wise with some of my beach paintings selling. This made me reflect on what one collector said to me. She wanted to buy one of my paintings to remind her of the beach holiday that they were going to miss out on this year. So much has changed.

However my love of the ocean, waves and coastline of Devon and Cornwall has not. They still provide the inspiration for all that I paint.

Here’s a quick preview of my latest paintings…..

An artist called Matthew Burrows came up with this genius idea for instagram. This was his way of helping artists during a time when galleries have closed and shows have been cancelled. The idea is a simple one, artist use the hashtag #artistsupportpledge when uploading work to instagram. Artists sell their work for under $200 (£200 in the UK) not including postage. When they reached £1,000 in sales, they buy a piece from another artist for £200/$200.

Here is my selection of work using this hashtag #artistsupportpledge…

It shows a large wave cresting, lit by the sun turning the waves turquoise and emerald green. The time of day is key here. It is midday, the strong sunlight is reflecting off the sea turning it white. The highlights become a mixture of emeralds and blues contrasting with the deep blue of the sea.

Just finished this new red abstract painting. It’s a bit of a departure from my usual seascape and wave paintings. However I felt inspired to paint an abstract in red this week.

Abstract Red oil on canvas painting 80 x 80 cm £450
80 x 80 cm or 31.5 x 31.5 Now available at £450

The inspiration for “Abstract Red” came from the theory behind the different  ways an individual sees a colour.

Everyone sees colour in a slightly different way to one another, call it colour perception. The way I see colour and the feelings I get when the colours align well on a canvas is appeals to me. Also, the way collectors see my work will be unique to them because of their own individual colour perception.

The arts could become more important for young people than maths in the future, according to a leading education expert.

Researcher Andreas Schleicher, who leads the Programme for International Student Assessment at the intergovernmental economic organisation OECD, told a House of Commons inquiry that he believed young people could benefit more from the skills gained through creativity than test-based learning.

He was giving evidence to the Education Select Committee as part of an ongoing inquiry into the fourth industrial revolution – the influence of technologies such as robotics and artificial intelligence on society.

Schleicher, who is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading educational thinkers, said: “I would say, in the fourth industrial revolution, arts may become more important than maths.”

“We talk about ‘soft skills’ often as social and emotional skills, and hard skills as about science and maths, but it might be the opposite,” he said, suggesting that science and maths may become ‘softer’ in future when the need for them decreases due to technology, and the ‘hard skills’ will be “your curiosity, your leadership, your persistence and your resilience”.

His comments come amid ongoing concerns about the narrowing of the education system in the UK to exclude creativity and prioritise academic subjects.

Campaigners argue that this is prohibiting many young people from pursuing creative careers. However, Schleicher said that too narrow a curriculum could also make young people less prepared for the demands of the future.

He said British schools largely regard skills as inferior to knowledge, and can be very focused on traditional tasks such as memorisation.

“When you look at the types of tasks that British students are doing better [than other countries], they are more those that are associated with the past than the future – the kind of things that are easy to teach and easy to test. It is precisely those things that are easy to digitise.

“The modern world doesn’t reward you for what you know, but for what you can do with what you know,” he said.
